Driving a Car After a Stroke

Overview

You may or may not be able to drive after a stroke. It will depend on how the stroke affected you. Many people are able to drive within about a year after a stroke.

Talk to your doctor about when you can drive. Don't drive unless your doctor says it's okay. Your doctor may refer you to a specialist to test you and make sure you can drive safely. Some people have assistive devices in their car to help them drive. Your doctor or rehab specialist can let you know if a device might help you.

Some states require your doctor to report that you had a stroke. Before you are allowed to drive, you may be required to take classes and tests. If you need transportation, check with the stroke rehab center, public transit agency, or community programs. They can help you find local services.
